My Ideal Backyard. Creating a Sustainable Oasis for Madison Area Homeowners

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Learning how to make garden beds with Growing Power

We work with many Madison area first time home buyers. We sit and drink coffee or tea together and our clients tell us their dreams in a home. With first time home buyers we usually hear things like: We are tired of sharing walls with neighbors, we want more privacy and we want to paint the walls whatever colors we want. We want to invite our friends over to to grill on the deck. And of course:

We want a yard. A place to let the dogs play. A place to garden. A place to grow food, plant flowers. A place to compost or build a chicken coop.

So we help them buy their first home. They get their yard. And then what?

They love their new home but don’t know what to do now that they have the yard. We have heard it many times. And now in perfect partnership with Sustain Dane we are excited to bring you a springtime seminar:

MY IDEAL BACKYARD: Turn your yard into a sustainable oasis.

Part book club, part get-your-hands-dirty workshop, these series of interactive classes teach how to put together a sustainable backyard. Learn the building and gardening skills necessary to install a raised bed, to put in a water catchment system, and to build a chicken coop—and then make them happen!

Throughout the program, participants meet with experts and practitioners to learn the reasons for backyard gardening—and then will take those skills to their own homes.

Each week, participants meet at one person’s backyard and install that week’s lesson.

Limited availability so sign up today!

Free Foreclosure Legal Clinic in Madison WI

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

FREE Foreclosure Legal Clinic in Madison is now available for any homeowner who is facing foreclosure now. As foreclosure and short sale experts in the real estate world, our team talks to a lot of people who are concerned with their ability to continue to pay their mortgage. Whether their adjustable rate mortgages are coming due or someone in the home has recently lost a job or a divorce is causing financial stress; there are many reasons that a looming foreclosure is a reality. Our website has great information as you start to understand what your options are and there are great local organizations that are here to help too. One of our favorite resources is the Dane County Foreclosure Legal Clinic.

Madison WI Foreclosure Legal Clinic

DATES: 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month
TIME: 11am – 1pm (This is a walk in clinic so come when you can)
LOCATION: City-County Building, Room 354 (3rd floor), 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Dane County homeowners facing foreclosure have access to a free legal clinic staffed by volunteer lawyers and law students. The clinic operates on a walk-in basis, no appointments are necessary.

The purpose of the clinic is to provide homeowners in foreclosure with basic legal information. Homeowners who have been served with a foreclosure lawsuit can receive help preparing a written response, which the homeowner can then file with the court. The goal of the program is to increase access to the legal system. A recent sampling of court filings shows that in 85% of cases in Dane County homeowners face foreclosure without the benefit of legal counsel. The clinic will help those who are unrepresented become more engaged in the process. Experience shows that homeowners who engage in the process early have better opportunities for a positive outcome.

The Foreclosure Answer Clinic is a collaborative effort of the Dane County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce, the Dane County Bar Association and the UW Law School, with grant funding provided by the State Bar of Wisconsin and other support provided by Dane County.

The Dane County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce is a coalition of public agencies, non-profit service providers and other community partners working together to develop sustainable alternatives to foreclosure in Dane County. Sara and Carlos Alvarado are proud to be a part of and support the Dane County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce.

Visit the Dane County Foreclosure website: www.daneforeclosurehelp.org or contact Carlos Alvarado at 608-438-6757 or carlos@thealvaradogroup.com for further questions.

How to Get Invited to an Alvarado Real Estate Group Party

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010
Madison's Betty Lou on Lake Mendota

Alvarado Team on a Betty Lou Cruise

Have you partied with the team at an Alvarado Group Client Appreciation Party or have you been invited to an Alvarado Group Client Party?

If you can’t answer yes to either of those options then you are in the right place to find out how to get invited to the next fiesta! Here are the rules:

1. Buy or sell a house with The Alvarado Group in the past 12 months (based on the date of the party).

2. Refer someone to The Alvarado Group that ends up hiring us to help them. They don’t have to have bought or sold yet – but a client agreement must be in place at the time of the party.

3. Marry (or be truly committed) to one of our great team members (and depending on the type of party, offspring are invited too). If you are a parent or sibling you do not get a free ride. You must follow rule #2 (the referring rule) or you may want to consider investing in real estate at least once a year.

And now…for a taste of the fun.

James is Julie's lucky husband and Cathy is always referring her friends to us!

*About REAP

[from their wonderful website]
Research, Education, Action and Policy on Food Group (REAP) is building a regional food system that is healthful, just, and both environmentally and economically sustainable. REAP is a non-profit organization located in Madison, WI.

REAP connects producers, consumers, policy makers, educators, businesses and organizations to nourish the links between land and table.

REAP is committed to projects that shorten the distance from farm to table, support small family farmers, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, preserve the diversity and safety of our food supply and address the food security of everyone in our community.

A “healthful, just and both environmentally and economically sustainable” food system is one that provides:

  • Nutritious, safe, and affordable food to all segments of society,
  • Fair compensation and safe, healthful working conditions for family farmers and food producers,
  • Support for agricultural and processing practices that protect our soil, water, and genetic diversity,
  • Access to a variety of regional foods that come to our table with minimal energy-consuming transportation or packaging,
  • Public policies that promote a secure and sustainable regional “foodshed.”

We are connected to many homeowners and families that are committed to learning more about sustainability, living in an eco friendly and healthy way and leaving as small of a carbon footprint as possible. That is why it is a part of our business and personal lives to support these organizations and community events. We appreciate you for your partipation and support as well. Thank you.

Willy Street Fair! September 25-26th, 2010 in Madison WI

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

willy street fair, madison wi
This is not just for Near East side fans, the Willy Street Fair is for everyone in the Madison area and surrounding to celebrate the last days of Summer with 6 stages of entertainment, a parade at 11am on Sunday, award winning local & national beers, fantastic foods from around the globe, fabulous hand made arts and crafts and all for a good cause - to support the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center and Common Wealth Development.

Alvarado Real Estate Group is a supporter of this Fair and will have a booth, so come visit us to fill up your water bottle with ice cold water and check out our inventory of great listings in the area. We are involved in supporting neighborhood events like these because for us it is what creates strong communities and we work with clients that want to move into a community, not just a house. It is what makes a neighborhood desireable and helps people feel a part of a community and not just a homeowner on a street. And we all benefit from that in many ways.

The Willy Street Fair is especially meaningful to everyone on our team because of our strong connections to the neighborhood and not just because our office is located 1/2 a block off of Willy Street on S. Livingston. Sara Alvarado grew up on Rutledge where her Father, Bruce Wunnicke, had his first residential real estate office on Willy Street and Sara went to Marquette Elementary through 3rd grade. Her two children attended Red Caboose for the past 9 years (as did Sara herself in preschool). Darcy Haber has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years and is a strong community organizer. Kathryn Wunnicke also lives in the area on Atwood Ave. And this year Julie Campbell is the proud mama of her son Sean, who is performing in a band at the Willy Street Fair. How exciting!
