Stoner Prairie At A Glance

Each day approximately 400 Kindergarten through fifth grade students walk through the
doors. Their mission as a school community is to challenge our students to reach their
academic potential, to love and respect them for who they are and to teach them the
absolute joy of learning.

The student population represents the diversity found throughout the community of
Fitchburg. The ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic levels, and neighborhoods in our
attendance area give our students unique opportunities to experience the natural balance that comprises much of urban Dane County. The diversity of our families also provides many opportunities for our school community to learn about a variety of ethnic and family customs.

The building is physically organized to promote student interaction and sharing among
teachers. As a SAGE school our goal is to maintain Kindergarten through Grade 3
classes at an average of 15 students. Our fourth and fifth grade classrooms are currently
approximately 25 students per teacher. In an attempt to support busy families we offer
both a breakfast and hot lunch program and an on-site after school day care center
sponsored through the YMCA.

Students are carefully placed in classroom groupings taking into account a variety of
social and academic factors. Along with the usual grade-level configurations our school
structure includes opportunity for teachers to team teach and loop with groups of children. The PALS (Partners Actively Learning) program is another option providing a multiage structure for classroom organization.

Stoner Prairie’s educational program has many strengths, providing a learning
community where diversity is celebrated and a variety of learning styles are nurtured. A
developmentally appropriate and carefully sequenced curriculum is sensitive to our
students’ needs, yet reflective of the nation’s most successful practices. Stoner Prairie is
a place where children, parents, professionals, and the community join together to plan,
to work and to learn.
