Huegel at a Glance

Madison’s only “school in the round” has been known as an innovative school since its opening in 1966. Strong teaching teams in grades K-5 share a philosophy that all children can learn and are included in all school activities and classrooms. An active parent organization supports many school activities and promotes multicultural experiences. An outdoor learning center and school prairie are part of our environment.

Location

Ray W. Huegel Elementary School is located on the far southwest side of Madison in the Meadowridge area. Huegel has an enrollment of over 430 students in kindergarten through grade 5.

Class Size

Huegel is a SAGE school with class size at 15:1 in grades K-3 and 23:1 at 4/5.

Family Partnerships

Huegel’s very active PTO meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Activities include topics of interest, fundraising, multicultural programming, family activities and many special events throughout each year.

Achievement Scores

Huegel students have consistently scored at or above the state and national standards on the Terra Nova, the fourth grade Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE), and the Wisconsin Third Grade Reading Test.

Special Classes

Teacher specialists in art, music, and physical education provide regual instruction. REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All Children) extends and supports classroom curriculum. Huegel’s Parent, Teacher and Children Association (PTCA) has also sponsored after school and enrichment classes in foreign language, crafts, fine arts, and movement.

Hip Hop Math Project

The lesson plans, activities and manipulatives of this program offered at Huegel Elementary incorporate “Math and Music” activities in the hopes of helping to close the achievement gap. These “Math and Music” activities use Hip Hop music and culture, which appeals to a great percentage of the students in the district. Lesson plans and activities were written for elementary and middle school math skills. In addition, there are links on the project’s website to High School lesson plans that were located on the World Wide Web.

Using Hip Hop music and culture, the school believes they will engage and motivate students to a level of which MMSD has only dreamed. Hip Hop music and culture is thoroughly embraced not only by many African American students but also many White, Latino, Asian and other students of color. Hip Hop music, rhythms, and culture is a central theme within the activities and lesson plans. They are aligned with the Math and Music standards of achievement.
